On a gray background lies a before and after image of the chair in question. On the left is the original cane chair with a tear along the top left edge of the cane seat with the word “OLD” above it in brown. In the middle is an arrow that changes from brown to yellow, left to right. On the right is a picture of the refurbished chair with a new upholstered seat with the word “NEW” above it in yellow.

Cane furniture pieces are beautiful and historic. You may have received them from a family member or found some at a yard sale/ flea market/ estate sale. However, cane furniture is known for being prone to tears and holes, and there is a good chance the piece of cane furniture in front of you is even torn right now. As you can see in the picture below, while the chair is in good condition, the top left side of the cane is torn, meaning the seat is unusable as is.

A beautiful cane chair sits on the hardwood floor in front of a gray wall. The chair is in good condition except for the tear in the cane seat on the top left edge.

Repairing cane furniture can be furstrating for a couple of reasons.

  1. Since there are fewer and fewer craftsmen who work with cane, finding someone to repair it can be difficult and their services can be expensive.
  2. You could look into finding a workshop to learn how to repair it yourself, but finding these may be difficult and even expensive in addition to supplies costs.
  3. Subsequent repairs will often still need to be made in the future as wear and tear continues.
